Greetings and welcome to your Chaplain’s Corner,
As your Chaplain, I can’t help but remember the significance that four chaplains of different faiths, who, in sacrificing their lives, created a unique legacy of brotherhood. On February 3, 1943, the United States Army Transport Dorchester tragically sunk while crossing the North Atlantic. A German U-boat fired a torpedo that struck the Dorchester, killing 672 of 902 officers and enlisted men, merchant seamen and civilian workers aboard. Many of those survivors owe their lives to the courage and leadership exhibited by these four chaplains of different faiths. As soldiers rushed to lifeboats, Reverend George Fox (Methodist), Jewish Rabbi Alexander Goode, Reverend Clark Poling (Dutch Reformed) and Father John Washington (Roman Catholic) comforted the wounded and directed others to safety. One survivor watched the chaplains distribute life jackets, and when they ran out, they removed theirs and gave them to four young men. As the Dorchester sank, the chaplains were seen linked arm in arm, praying.
On February 23rd we also reflect on history, in 1945, when the Battle at Iwo Jima occurred. There was so much bravery and sacrifice made with all the warfighters, and many had just fought their way through Europe’s toxic Battle of the Bulge. The American Legion’s pledge to “preserve the memories and incidents of our associations in all wars” is so important for us to remember. Let’s continue to teach the next generations about these sacrifices, and how they shaped the land of the free and the home of the brave…
Lord, as we reflect on these significant times in history during the month of February, let us remember these are examples of how many times men and women have sacrificed themselves for others. Let this be a reminder that all people are created equal and capable of showing such courage and such compassion. Forgive us for those times in which we participate in the freedoms of our land yet fail to honor the rights of all Americans. Help us to learn how to show justice in our lives, to love mercy in our relationship with others, and to always walk humbly with You. Thank You, for watching over us. May we feel Your presence in the joy of celebrating Your love, as it shines through the human spirit of those who have sacrificed so much. May we all gain wisdom and compassion as we move forward into the fullness of what you have for us. O Lord, we pray in Your name, For God and Country, Amen.
Blessings, from your Chaplain, Tamara Goodman
